Autosuggestion: What It Is & 4 Steps On How To Start Using It

Autosuggestion is a psychological technique where an individual guides their feelings, thoughts and behaviors through self-induced suggestion. It was developed by apothecary Emile Coue in the early 20th century and appeared in the book “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

This post will briefly offer 4 steps on how to use autosuggestion into your life. Those steps are, define a vision, develop a personal credo, walk your talk and remind yourself. Here we go!

Define Your Vision

Defining a vision of your ideal self is the first step in using autosuggestion. Imagine all your desires coming true and put that into to your vision. Close your eyes and see it play out as if you are watching a movie. A movie where you are the leading character. Go deeper, using all your senses. What are the sounds, the taste, the smells? What does it feel like? See it clearly.

Develop a Personal Credo for Your Autosuggestion

Develop a personal statement that embodies your life philosophy. What do you stand for? Is there anything that you will not tolerate? What are you grateful for? How does this personal statement fit into your ideal vision? Reconcile any differences. First, brainstorm, think about how your statement will reflect who you are. Then, distill the your personal statement to the essential parts, making it as short and succinct as possible. It may take a few rounds to get it just right. When you have it, say this statement to yourself at least twice daily. Once when you wake up and again at bedtime.

Walk Your Autosuggestion Talk

Do the work behind the saying. The saying & vision alone won’t be enough. Do the work that brings you closer to the manifestation of your vision and both elements will begin to feed off of each other. When it gets tough, remember the work that you’ve already put in.

Remind Yourself

Make a tangible vision board of what you want to accomplish. Have fun with it. Who do you look up to? Who do you wish you could be more like? Write it out. Adopt personal affirmations that support your statement. Place little reminders around your living space that will bring you back to your vision.

Conclusion

Through these exercises your are, essentially, building a bridge between the subconscious and conscious minds. That is, you are uncovering your true desires and bringing them to the forefront. Incorporate a regular visualization practice. Read How to Practice Visualization and Find Your Signal in the Noise to learn more about visualization. When you couple your vision & affirmations with genuine hard work, you will move in the directions that you truly desire. You will move past your own cynicism and start living a more authentic life.
